2025:

  • Save the date 24 June: Major event in Kampen, the Netherlands, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the world's first succesful kidney dialysis using an artificial kidney by a team led by Dr. Kolff in the municipal hospital in the city of Kampen, the Netherlands (11 September, 1945).
    The patient, 67-year Maria Sofia Schafstadt, Dr. Kolff and his team made world history. Maria Schafstadt was the world's first kidney patient to survive a treatment with an artificial kidney. Millions of people around the world would benefit from this giant step in medical history.

  • 22 March: Presentation by Dr. J.J.G. Offerman (nephrologist, board member Willem Kolff Foundation), Kolff Kidney Centre
    (Groningen).
     
  • 29 March: Museum De Wemme in Zuidlaren (Drenthe province, the Netherlands) opens its doors with a new exposition 'Typically Dutch' including a small section on Dr. Willem Kolff's life and achievements (with participation of the Willem Kolff Foundation).

  • 14-15 September, participation Public Monuments Day. The facilities will be open to the public on Saturday 14 September from 10 am - 5 pm, on Sunday 15 September from 1 - 5 pm with free entrance to Dr. Kolff's working place in the former hospital in the Hanseatic city of Kampen where he developed his ideas and the arificial kidney (Dr. Kolff Museum Room).   • 13-14 December: Participation 34th Workshop Nephrology of Radbud UMC with exhibition booth showing original equipment as well as replicas, documentation, photos and other paraphernalia pertaining to Dr. Kolff's work and life.   • 8 December: This year's Maria ter Welle prize was awarded to Gerben van den Bosch (Radboud UMC, Nijmegen).
     
  • 9 - 10 September, Public Monuments Day - with free entrance to Dr. Kolff's working place in the former hospital in the Hanseatic city of Kampen where he developed his ideas and the arificial kidney (Dr. Kolff Museum Room). Visiting address: Myosotis, Woonzorgcomplex, Engelenbergplantsoen 3, Kampen, the Netherlands.
     
  • 4 April: Major event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the world's first succesful kidney dialysis using an artificial kidney by a team led by Dr. Kolff in the municipal hospital in the city of Kampen, the Netherlands (4 April, 1943). The patient, 29-year old Janny Schrijver, lived for another four weeks before passing away following medical complications. 
    The celebration of the 80th anniversary included the presentation of a documentary especially made for the occasion (Director: Jonathan Marks). Dr. Fokko Wieringa (IMEC) meeting with the mayor of the city of Kampen, Mr. Sander de Rouwe, together they visited the historic site of Dr. Kolff's working place in the former city hospital which has been turned into a museum. A second leg of the celebration took place in Eindhoven, in the province of Dutch Brabant, where a symposium was held, '80 years dialysis: past, present, and perspectives', enabling researchers, enterpreneurs and patients also to network. The event was organized by the Dutch Kidney Foundation, the Willem Kolff Foundation and the IMEC.
     
  • 28 - 29 March: Dutch Nephrology Days, Veldhoven, the Netherlands. For the program and study and research abstracts, please click here. WKF board members Derk Meulman (chair) and Joop Offerman participated on behalf of the WKF.
    The WKF participation also included the presentation of an exhibition booth with original equipment as well as replicas (1943, 1956 and 1964), documentation, photos and other paraphernalia pertaining to Dr. Kolff's work and life. 
     
  • 15 March: Panta Rhei Campen (PRC), Kampen, the Netherlands. Presentation covering the work of the Willem Kolff Foundation (WKF) and recent developments in the area of artificial organs, by Dr. J.J.G. Offerman (board member; nephrologist). 

2022:

  • 24 March: Rotary Club, Kampen. Presentation on Dr. Kolff and the Willem Kolff Foundation by Prof. Ruud Bank (RUG; board member WKF).
  • 18 November: Maria ter Welle Prize 2021 (earlier postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic) awarded to Marjo van Helden (Nijmegen, the Netherlands).
